writer & editor
About Skyler
I'm a writer, editor, and educator currently located in Brooklyn, NY. I first began exploring journalism as a staff writer for the arts section of The Chronicle at Duke University, for which I later worked as the culture editor. I had the opportunity to work with Universal Studios in virtual roundtable interviews, where I interviewed actors and directors about their upcoming films to write a review. I also covered the blossoming arts scene in Durham, which strengthened my connection to my Charlotte roots.

Starting in the spring of 2020, I was the editorial director for FORM, Duke's arts & lifestyle magazine. In addition to editing pieces for clarity, precision, and adherence to AP style, I contributed my own poetry and creative work.

In the fall of 2021, I was a music news staff writer for MXDWN, an online entertainment publication. With MXDWN, I covered all breaking news in music, from album announcements and tour mishaps to lawsuits and artist deaths.

After graduating from Duke, I joined Teach for America and have since been working as a 7th-grade teacher, hoping to inspire my students to document their own stories.

When I'm not writing or working, you may find me strumming along to bluegrass hits or gardening (or at least attempting to, with nothing but vegetable scraps and a small Brooklyn apartment).
